Phyllis Ann Puckett

Phyllis Ann Phelps Puckett, a true earth-bound Angel, went to be with her Lord and family in Heaven on the early morning of July 27th, 2023.  Born to Montie Warren Phelps and Pauline Ball Phelps on September 18th, 1934.  She survived the Great Depression, World War II, Multiple Sclerosis, cancer and many other challenges with a dignity and quiet strength matched by few.  Phyllis grew up in Iaeger, WV, with her oldest brother Warren, who served in the Navy, and with her beloved sister and best friend, Betty Jo and brother, Montie “Sonny” Phelps at home watching out for her.  She graduated from Iaeger High School in 1952.  She completed Bluefield Business College Secretarial School and worked at Stevens Hospital in WV.  She later worked at St. Lukes, Pulaski and Giles Hospitals as a medical transcriptionist.  While in high school, she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Coy Puckett, Jr., sweethearts for 71 years, the last 64 as husband and wife.  Phyllis was a good athlete, excelling at basketball and was a champion marble shooter.  She was a devout Christian, having attended First Baptist Church in Pearisburg until her health precluded it.  She loved bird watching and reading.  After her husband graduated Concord College, Bill and Phyllis moved to Pulaski, VA and later to Pearisburg where Bill served as Principal of Giles High School and Phyllis worked at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg.  Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, Warren Phelps, Montie “Sonny” Phelps and his wife Lucille, a sister, Betty Jo Woodie and her husband Marvin and 2 siblings that died before she was born.  She is survived by her life mate, William C. Puckett of Pearisburg, 1 son, Marc Puckett (Sarah Elam) of Pamplin, VA, and their daughter, Grace Ann and her beloved daughter, Tracey Puckett Hobbs (Billy) of Pearisburg.  She was loved by all her nieces and nephews, Myra Jo, Marvin, Stuart, Marty and Terry.  She enjoyed the love and caring of her neighbors, Debbie and Tony Reed and her caregivers, Kathy Gibson and Brenda Whittaker.  The family would like to thank her Carilion medical family, her home care team from Warm Hearth Health and her very special Carilion Home Hospice team.  By her request, she will be cremated, and a Celebration of Life will be held, September 17, 2023, at 3:00pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with Charles Henderson officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home 2 hours before the service from 1 - 3pm.  While Phillis endured many physical challenges, she was well loved and happy.  Online condolences can be sent to the family at givensfuneralhome.com.
