Mary Dean Thornton, 78 of Pearisburg, VA passed away quietly on July 30, 2014 at Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg. Mrs. Thornton was born on May 6, 1936 and was a daughter of the late George Boston Dean and Fannie May Milton Dean. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert H. Thornton, one sister, Annibel V. Parks, three brothers, George B. Dean, Jr., Bernard L. Dean, Jessie A. Dean and a beloved Aunt, Laura E. Beck. Mrs. Thornton was a member at Old St. Mary’s Baptist Church in Washington, DC where she helped with the Sr. Choir, the Missionary Circle, church wide chorus, the Willing Workers, the Flower Club, the April, May, June Birthday Club and the Help Feed the Hungry program. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Pearisburg and was a member of the Missionary Circle and the Gospel Chorus. Mary had a love for Arts and Crafts and flower gardening. She is survived by one brother, William (Willie) Dean and Dorene Merrix of Pearisburg, one sister, Betty Dean Chapman of Lindside, WV, a niece who is like her daughter, Marjorie C. Ross of Lexington, NC, a nephew who also is like her son, Melvin C. Chapman, Jr. of Lindside, a dear sister-in-law, Thelma L. Dean of Christiansburg, and a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted, Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 2pm at the First Baptist Church in Pearisburg with the Rev. Michael Bratton officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will received friends Tuesday at the Church two hours before the service from 12 - 2 pm.
