Jean Adams Gilreath, 88 of Wytheville, VA., formerly of Pearisburg, Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Jean was born in Norton, VA., and was a daughter of the late Charles G. Adams and Mollie Virginia Bateman Adams. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, James “Jim” Marshall Gilreath, and her brothers, James W. Adams, Fred T.Adams, Corbin Gilbert Adams, Bobby Ray Adams, and Charles G. Adams, Jr. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Jean was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg and was formerly employed by Princeton Public Library (1979–1987) and Giles Memorial Hospital (1987–2004). She loved the Lord and remained actively involved in church activities for as long as she was able. Jean was also a devoted and unwavering Dodgers fan for more than 75 years, having followed her beloved team since 1950, when they were still the Brooklyn Dodgers. Through the heartbreaking losses, and the thrill of World Series championships, her loyalty never wavered. She delighted in celebrating their recent World Series victories, a wonderful reward for a lifetime of cheering on her favorite team.
She is survived by her daughter, Marcia G. Ferris (Steve) of Bluefield, WV., “adopted” son, Brian Manning (Donna) of Prince George, VA, grandsons, Joel Ferris (Katie), Scott Ferris and special friends, Carl Adams of Newport, Ellen Salmon of Pearisburg, Carol Keeton of Blacksburg, and Kay Stallard Johson of Wytheville.
