Ernest Reed Bowles

Ernest Reed Bowles, 91, formerly of Ripplemead, VA went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 23, 2013. Mr. Bowles was born in Giles County on December 5, 1921 the son of the late Charles J. and Mary Dillon Bowles. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Jim, Joe, Lewis, and Martin Reed and two sisters, Edna Bowles Blevins and Elizabeth Bowles Duncan. Mr. Bowles was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, a member of the American Legion Post #68 in Narrows, and a longtime member of First United Methodist Church Pearisburg where he was an active participant in the Men’s Prayer Breakfast. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mary Margaret Caldwell Bowles, formerly of Ripplemead; a daughter, Bonny Bowles Spruill of Roanoke; a son, Robert D. Bowles and daughter-in-law Patricia Elliott Bowles of Roanoke; two granddaughters Mary Elizabeth Spruill of Fairfax, VA and Melanie Bowles of Roanoke and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at First United Methodist Church Pearisburg at 401 Hale Street, Pearisburg, Virginia from 10 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Brian Burch and Rev. Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating. Burial will follow at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to First United Methodist Church Pearisburg, P.O. Box 400, Pearisburg, VA 24134.
