In Loving Memory of

David Stephen Mertz, Sr.

David Stephen Mertz Sr. entered his Heavenly home at UVA hospitals on July 6, 2020 after a courageous battle from NASH liver disease, with his loving wife of 48 years Gloria Norman Mertz of Pearisburg VA by his side. David was born July 5th, 1953 at the Marine Base Quantico, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Captain E.P. (USMC retired) and Ruth Parks Mertz, his brother, Philip Mertz, his maternal grandparents, Howard and Ann Parks and paternal, Frank and Eleanor Mertz. Left to cherish the memory of David is his wife, Gloria Norman Mertz, of Pearisburg; Sons, Stephen Mertz of Pearisburg, Michael Mertz of Narrows, Grandson, Ean Mertz of Narrows, brothers; Jon Mertz of Madison Heights, VA, Tim Mertz of Chester, VA and sisters; Deborah Mertz Moody of Clover, SC., Cheryl Mertz of Pearisburg, two sister-in-laws and one brother-in-law and special friend, Bobby Smith along with numerous nieces and nephews and extended family that loved him dearly. David always had a smile, a real zest for life and loved to keep busy by helping family and friends. David managed the Maxway and Magic Marts Department stores and then owned his Convenient Texaco Subway (Star Mart) Store and Bobby’s Car Wash. David enjoyed serving at Riverview Baptist church by working in the kitchen and serving on Mission trips. He loved traveling to various exotic places, fixing up houses, traveling on his Harley Davidson motorcycle, having a Bike Ride to The Wall in DC, loved life and spending time with his grandson Ean. David’s wish was to be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 11am at the Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead with Pastor Shahn Wilburn officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. We will be observing phase 3 Covid-19 precautions. Please wear a mask and adhere to social distancing.
