In Loving Memory of

Maury C. Newton, Jr.

Maury Claiborne Newton, Jr., a longtime Cobb County Internist and Cardiologist, died Saturday at his home in Kennesaw. Born in 1927 in Roanoke , Virginia , Dr. Newton served in the United States Navy near the end of World War II. He graduated from Wake Forest University where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Alpha Fraternity and from the Medical College of Virginia. He joined his father in the general practice of medicine until his father’s death in 1961. Dr. Newton enjoyed two satisfying and highly respected careers, first as a country doctor in the small town of Narrows in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia from 1954 to 1973. After completing a fellowship in cardiology, he served on the staff of the University of Virginia Medical School as Assistant Professor of Medicine. In 1977, he joined the practice of his medical college classmate Dr. William Edward Holladay and was also a partner of Dr. Robert P. Coggins and Dr. George T. Mims. Dr. Newton practiced twenty-one years in Marietta before retiring in October 1998. Dr. Newton was instrumental in establishing the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Kennestone Hospital and performed the first catheterization and the 10,000th procedure. While in practice, Dr. Newton was a fellow in the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians, and was a member of the Society of Echocardiology. Dr. Newton is survived by his wife, Pamela Croy Newton of Kennesaw; a son, Maury Claiborne Newton III of Chesterfield , Virginia ; two daughters, Cynthia Chadwick, Moorpark , California and Lucy Maloney, Raleigh , North Carolina ; seven grandchildren, and a brother, Dr. Richard Milton Newton, Roanoke , Virginia . A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 14 at 7 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, 571 Holt Road NE , Marietta , Georgia 30068. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the organ fund at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, 571 Holt Road NE , Marietta , Georgia 30868 or to Wellstar Hospice Home Care Fund, 4040 Hospital West Drive , Austell , Georgia 30106 or to Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital Foundation, 1 Taylor Avenue , Pearisburg , VA   24134 .   Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta is in charge of arrangements.
